Melbourne – Australia the Italian ageing population.

It is no surprise the Italian helped shape Melbourne in the earlier years of migration. Now the Italian-born community is in rapid decline down from 87,392 residents in 1996 to 63,332 at present.

Better medication, medication and lack of new born Melburnians has all contributed to an ageing community, with almost 40 per cent of Italian-born Melburnians aged 75 and older.

An eye opening 70 per cent of Italian-born Melburnians are 65 or older compared to only 10 per cent of Australian born.

Very few Italians have arrived in recent years; just 1817 between 1976 and 1985, 821 between 1986 and 1995, and only 625 in 2015.
Nearly three-quarters of all suburbs have zero Italian-born residents.
